Sitting Too Long? Try This Low Back Reset

Motion is medicine — but only if you use it often.

Feel stiff, sore, or achy after sitting all day? It's not just you. And it's not just age. Your discs, joints, and muscles all respond directly to time spent still — and the longer you sit, the more your back stiffens.

The good news: you don't need a standing desk, a new chair, or a gym membership to fix this. You need a routine.

"Sitting isn't the problem. Staying still is."

Why Sitting Causes Back Pain

When you sit for extended periods, a few things happen: your hip flexors shorten, your glutes switch off, and your discs lose the hydration and movement they need to stay healthy. Meanwhile, the small stabilizing muscles of your spine stop doing their job — which means bigger, less precise muscles start picking up the slack. That's where the aching and stiffness comes from.

The fix isn't to stand all day either — too much standing creates its own problems. The goal is variety and frequent movement throughout your day.

A Simple Reset That Works

The Low Back Reset
  1. Every 30–45 minutes, stand up and move in 3 directionsForward (forward fold), backward (hands on lower back, gentle extension), and side to side (lateral reach). Just 20–30 seconds each.
  2. Alternate between sitting and standing throughout your dayYour body wants variety. Too much sitting is a problem — but so is standing all day. Mix it up whenever you can.
  3. Add a movement routine to your lunch breakEven 5 minutes of intentional movement mid-day resets your spine and gives you more energy for the rest of the afternoon.

Why This Works

You don't need a new chair. You need a new routine. The people who suffer the least with desk-related back pain aren't the ones with the fanciest setups — they're the ones who move consistently throughout the day.
